Meet Dr. Howard Routman

Orthopedic Surgeon Howard D. Routman, D.O., F.A.O.A.O.

Meet Dr. Howard D. Routman
Dr. Routman joined Atlantis Orthopaedics in 2001. His clinical practice specializes in the management of all aspects of conditions that affect the shoulder. His academic activities include research efforts that also focus on the shoulder.

Dr. Routman has lectured locally, regionally and nationally on shoulder topics and has directed and participated in many didactic and practical courses to train Orthopaedic surgeons in the methods for shoulder diagnosis and the techniques for non-operative and operative treatment. Dr. Routman’s current emphasis for surgical treatment is in minimally-invasive arthroscopic shoulder surgery techniques.

After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Routman attended Nova-Southeastern University Medical School and graduated with highest honors. He entered training at Ohio University’s Doctor’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio for Internship, and completed his Orthopaedic Surgical training at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he was selected Chief Resident, overseeing a sixteen resident program. This training was under John J. McPhilemy, D.O., the team physician for the Philadelphia 76’ers Basketball Club, and Dr. Routman had the opportunity to spend time working with the team as well as an Assistant Team Physician.
After completion of Orthopaedic training, Dr. Routman was very fortunate to be selected as a Fellow in Shoulder Reconstruction at the prestigious Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital in Columbus, Georgia. During a full year of sub-specialized training in shoulder disorders under George M. McCluskey III, M.D., Dr. Routman conducted research and was educated on the management of complex shoulder disorders. He was awarded the Revere Cup for excellence in clinical research by the Hughston Society because of his work as a fellow on the rotator cuff deficient arthritic shoulder. Since that time, he has been involved in FDA sanctioned research on complex shoulder disorders and has traveled and operated on shoulders internationally. He continues to travel and lecture regularly, sharing his experience with other surgeons. Dr. Routman is an Associate Clinical Professor, Division of Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Nova-Southeastern University and is actively involved in teaching students, interns and residents from the Nova program. Among his other endeavors, he is involved in the design and modification of Orthopaedic surgical instruments and implants for shoulder surgery and is involved as a coach in a local girl’s fast-pitch softball league where he supports the efforts of his two daughters and their teammates.
Dr. Routman is the Director of Palm Beach Shoulder Service and the President and Founder of Palm Beach Shoulder and Sports Medicine Foundation, a local non-profit organization promoting educational research and injury prevention".
